Growing Guide: How to Grow Persicaria (Bistort)

Persicaria, commonly known as Bistort, is a versatile perennial valued for its striking flower spikes, attractive foliage, and ability to thrive in a variety of conditions. Whether planted in borders, cottage gardens, or near water features, Persicaria provides a long-lasting display of colour and texture throughout the growing season. Its easy-care nature and ability to thrive in moist soils make it a favourite among gardeners looking for reliable and impactful plants.

Ideal Growing Conditions

  • Location: Persicaria grows well in full sun to partial shade. While it thrives in sunny spots, it can tolerate some shade, particularly in warmer climates. Perfect for damp areas of the garden, such as near ponds, streams, or low-lying spots.
  • Soil: Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil but can tolerate heavier, clay-like soils. Add organic matter like compost to enrich poor soils and improve moisture retention.
  • Watering: Persicaria prefers consistently moist soil, especially during dry periods. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely. Mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Planting Instructions

  • Spacing: Space plants 30-60 cm apart, depending on the variety, to allow room for their spreading growth habit.
  • Planting Depth: Plant at the same depth as they were in their pot, ensuring the crown of the plant sits just at soil level.
  • Soil Preparation: Enrich the planting area with well-rotted compost or a general-purpose fertiliser to provide nutrients for strong growth.

Seasonal Care

  • Spring Care: In early spring, apply a layer of compost or organic fertiliser to encourage new growth. Divide established clumps every 3-4 years to rejuvenate the plant and prevent overcrowding.
  • Deadheading and Pruning: Remove spent flower spikes to encourage a tidier appearance and potentially prolong the blooming period. Cut back old foliage in late autumn or early spring to make way for fresh growth.
  • Winter Care: Most Persicaria varieties are hardy and require little winter protection. However, a layer of mulch around the base can help insulate the roots in very cold climates.

Companion Planting

Persicaria pairs beautifully with moisture-loving plants such as Astilbes, Hostas, and Ligularia.
For a contrasting look, combine with tall grasses, Rudbeckia, or Echinacea for bold textures and colours in the garden.

Persicaria (Bistort) is a versatile, low-maintenance perennial that brings vibrant colour and texture to gardens. Thriving in moist soils and adapting to various conditions, it’s perfect for borders, water features, and naturalistic settings. With minimal care, Persicaria will reward you with lush foliage and stunning blooms throughout the growing season.
