Puschkinia (Striped Squill)

Puschkinia Libanotica is a very petty Spring flowering bulb, that also goes by the names Striped Squill, Russian Snowdrop and Lebanon Squill. A member of the asparagus family, this small relative of the hyacinth is a very versatile little flower which makes it a useful tool for gardeners and growers. The pretty Puschkinia plant produces a single stalk above attractive dark green foliage topped with a cluster of small ice-blue flowers. The flowers bear delicate blue stripes down the middle of each petal and have a sweet fragrance.

Where to plant Puschkinia bulbs

As mentioned previously, Puschkinia Libanotica or Striped Squill is a rather versatile plant that can be used in a variety of garden or landscape settings. Due to its small stature – Puschkinia grows to a height of around 10-15cm – it can be used as attractive ground cover. It also looks wonderful when planted in rock gardens, in between shrubs, at the base of deciduous trees, and also performs well in pots and containers. Puschkinia bulbs make a wonderful companion plant for other Spring flowers such as daffodils and tulips.

Care for Puschkinia bulbs

Puschkinia or Striped Squill bulbs are very easy to grow and require little special attention. They simply require well-drained soil and to be planted 5-8 cm apart at a depth of around 10-13cm. Puschkinia bulbs naturalise easily through bulb offsets (baby bulbs on the sides of the mother bulb you’ve planted) as well as by self-sowing seed, and return year after year in greater numbers creating a beautiful Spring display. Foliage should not be removed after bloom until it turns yellow.
