Description
One of the most attractive varieties, Potentilla Monarch's Velvet showcases captivating heart-shaped petals in raspberry-red, encircling a velvety crimson center. This stunning flower complements beautifully with oranges, yellows, and other vibrant hues, creating a striking visual display.
Potentilla Monarch Velvet is a relatively new variety of cinquefoil that was introduced in 2008. This ptentilla was bred by crossing two species of cinquefoil, Potentilla thurberi and Potentilla flabellifolia. The resulting plant has the deep red flowers of Potentilla thurberi and the mounding habit of Potentilla flabellifolia. It is a more compact and floriferous plant than either of its parents. It was named after the Monarch butterfly, which is attracted to the flowers.
Potentilla Monarch Velvet has been well-received by gardeners and has won several awards, including the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It is a popular choice for adding colour to sunny borders and patios.
Apply a light layer of mulch around the plant in the autumn to protect the roots from cold weather.
