Description
Phlox paniculata Butonik, introduced in 1993 by a dedicated phlox breeder in Russia, is a truly extraordinary perennial that defies expectations. Unlike typical phlox varieties, Butonik produces vibrant flower buds in bright pink, slightly tinged with purple, which never fully open. These perpetual buds form dense, well-filled panicles on strikingly dark purple stems, creating an intriguing display that captivates the eye for weeks on end.
With its bushy growth habit, Butonik reaches a medium height and features dark green foliage with subtle purple hues on the upper leaves. Its unique late-summer "flowering" period brings vibrant colour to the garden without conventional blooms. The illusion of buds on the verge of opening adds a dynamic quality to borders, making it ideal for the front or middle where its striking details can be closely admired.
Butonik thrives in sunny locations with well-drained, fertile soil. This phlox is not only a conversation starter but also a beautiful addition to mixed plantings. Pair it with contrasting perennials like white echinacea or silvery grasses to enhance its rich colours and distinctive form. Despite its unconventional nature, it remains easy to grow and care for, offering a truly unique gardening experience.
At DutchGrown, we select only the highest quality bare root perennials, ensuring vigorous plants and exceptional performance. With Phlox Butonik, you’ll enjoy a one-of-a-kind variety that stands out in both its appearance and fascinating non-blooming characteristic.
We ship our phlox bare root plants in Spring. Dispatch from London.
