Description
Phlomis russeliana, commonly known as Jerusalem Sage, is a striking and resilient perennial that brings architectural interest and year-round appeal to the garden. Its bold, felted leaves form a dense, ground-hugging rosette of soft, silvery-green foliage, providing texture and contrast in borders or naturalistic planting schemes. From late spring to midsummer, tall flower spikes rise above the foliage, adorned with whorls of pale yellow, hooded flowers that create an elegant tiered effect.
Native to the eastern Mediterranean, this hardy and drought-tolerant plant thrives in sunny, well-drained locations and performs beautifully in a variety of soil types, including poor or rocky soils. Reaching a height of 90–120 cm when in bloom, Phlomis russeliana is ideal for adding vertical structure to mixed borders, gravel gardens, or Mediterranean-inspired designs. Its seed heads, which persist through autumn and winter, add additional ornamental value, making it a standout feature year-round.
Low-maintenance and highly attractive to pollinators, Phlomis russeliana is a fantastic choice for wildlife-friendly gardens. Its striking form and ability to suppress weeds through its spreading foliage make it a practical as well as beautiful addition to the garden.
